Statement of Teaching Philosophy
My Statement of Teaching Philosophy has two components: the teaching of dance technique that is anatomically based and training the dancer to have individual artistic interpretation.
My teaching philosophy is centered in teaching a strong basic dance technique emphasizing proper alignment that will sustain and support the dancer as they move across different dance disciplines. I encourage my students to have full body awareness, be conscious, and to learn to think for themselves. My classes are structured to give dancers strong technique in order to enhance their performance skills, on both technical and artistic levels. During each class I give numerous corrections both individual and general. Through my teaching, I give students ample opportunity for practical ‘hands on’ experience, so they will be able to understand these perceptions and begin to take responsibility for their dance career and themselves. It is important for me, as a teacher, to develop the student’s technical and artistic “eye” so they can begin to see and feel the differences within themselves.
In my classes I allow students the opportunity to find their individual expression and create their own unique style of movement. I allow each student to develop their creative and artistic understanding, one that is unique and personal to them. I attempt to broaden their vision by exposing them to new experiences beyond their current limits. I teach several different styles of movement so the dancer is prepared for any type of audition or creative endeavor. I give the dancer real life information on the dance world and a taste of what is required and demanded as a professional. I feel this real world experience helps the student narrow their focus and guides them to create their place in the dance world. I feel it is my job to encourage and motivate them completely, both as an artist and as an individual. I believe that with every dancer there is a beautiful energy and passion inside just waiting to burst out.
As a teacher, the ability to give students individual attention both inside the classroom and beyond inspires me completely. I firmly believe that dance not only disciplines the body, but speaks to the heart and develops the person inside and out. This is the philosophy I attempt to teach.
